"L.A. merchants of down-tuned radness...from what I can hear, this shit is a Doomadelic Missile aimed at the sun!"
"Ancient Altar's début release is an heavy mix of Sludge, Doom, Hard Rock, Stoner Metal all held together with a thick crusted Post-Metal groove to awaken your senses to. It may only last 27 mins or so but it more than makes it up with some heavy as fuck pounding gigantic riffs to crush your senses to.
"Ancient Altar are being tipped for great things and on this form who are we to argue. Ancient Altar are on the verge of greatness. These guys will be one of the most talked about bands in the years to come. Watch these guys soar!!!"
"Los Angeles label Midnite Collective picked a winner with this 27-minute slab of doom, blues and post metal groove. Ancient Altar has carved their mark at the starting line and I can only imagine the momentum their respective talents and experience will bring from this point forward."
"There is a brutal tempest coming from Los Angeles and it is shaped in the rather tasty form of the self –titled EP from Ancient Altar. The four track debut from the band is a voracious beast of an encounter unleashing a fusion of corrosive doom and suffocating sludge causticity. The release preys upon and slowly smothers the senses in an inhospitable hunger and intensity but within that ruinous intent there is a rich vein of seductive bait which twists the psyche into an even more submissive victim. It is a heavily striking introduction to a band already gaining acclaim and a potent reputation at home, a release with a wealth of imposing potential to suggest Ancient Altar has a massive future."
"Ancient Altar’s self-titled 26 min album is a bundle of 4 tracks exploring the different facets doom, sludge and post metal can achieve when combined by experienced musicians with a sight for calm destruction...it makes Ancient Altar a promising band that can only go higher, greater and stronger as time goes by and you should be there to see that happening."
"Ancient Altar play a mixture of psychedelic doom and sludge with crushingly heavy riffs and a plodding pace.
"Screeched vocals from Carlson are enhanced by a more shouted accompaniment from Kavener, but what really shine on this debut are the catchy riffs and the more psychedelic, quiet moments. Look for Ancient Altar to make a dramatic impact."
"Los Angeles' rising beast ANCIENT ALTAR summons the thick, grizzly sludge metal demons in this crushing debut, incorporating elements of doom and psychedelia. A massive blow to the gut, this album pummels from beginning to end leaving you aching for more.
"For fans of:
Bongzilla, Buzzov-en, Kylesa".
"These are the cries of the diseased and the damned filtering through the filth. The darkness envelopes you...The bludgeoning repetition is merciless in its execution and you’re under no illusion that the doom demons are circling again."
"8 out of 10"
"Ancient Altar offer a vast expanse of soiled soundscapes. Crashing doom with swirling, torrid-clip chasers of stoner metal, complete with frayed ends and shifted gears. On this wholly flattening debut, we're enticed, we're drawn closer, and we're ultimately swallowed by what we're unable to predict."
'“Tidal” finds the group moving through extremely heavy doom/sludge that transitions into some more traditional rock/doom grooves halfway through. It’s the kind of song that grabbed my attention early and then stuck with me on repeat listens."
"Ancient Altar play a very dark and heavy style that takes the heaviness of doom and sludge metal and they mix it in with the melody of 70's and stoner rock to create a sound of their own, the productions sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover arcane philosophy.
"In my opinion Ancient Altar are a very great sounding mixture of doom metal, sludge and heavy rock. 8 out of 10."
